Dowd flunks possessive before gerund again

That Dowd doesn't use the possessive before the gerund goes against the advice of the Times's style book and the grammar rule. It can't be that she can't master this grammar rule. Anybody who has absorbed all the minutiae of pop culture's patois as she has done has enough brains to use this rule.

He thinks most people recognize that “there is a concrete advantage to not only foreign leaders, but foreign populations possessive before gerund liking the American president, redundant comma before a trailing adverbial clause because it makes it easier for Sarkozy to send troops into Afghanistan if his voting base likes the United States.”

How does he like the McCain camp possessive before gerund mocking him as “The One”?
